Style and Power: The Indo-Saracenic Debate in Colonial India

When we admire the domes, arches, and ornate façades of Indo-Saracenic architecture, it is tempting to imagine a fruitful collaboration between British architects and Indian master-builders. After all, the carvings and details are unmistakably Indian, and the craftsmanship undeniably exquisite. But look closer, and another story emerges—one about who actually held creative control.

The Role of British Architects

The striking thing about Indo-Saracenic buildings across British India is that, despite their Indian dress, they were designed almost entirely by British architects.

• Charles Mant was celebrated for his mastery of Rajput and Mughal motifs, but his process was solitary. He traveled, sketched, photographed, and studied Indian monuments with the eye of an outsider. Only once his designs were finalized on paper did Indian craftsmen come in—to execute, not to collaborate.
• R. F. Chisholm, in his public lectures, praised Indian masons for their skill and seemed to suggest that he worked closely with them. But his own testimony is clear: he called in craftsmen only “when the design was completed.”
• Vincent Esch, in Hyderabad, likewise tipped his hat to local talent. Yet his surviving working drawings reveal that every detail had already been carefully planned by his own hand.

In other words, Indian builders were essential, but their role was confined to execution. They carved, they assembled, they brought life to stone—but the design authority remained firmly with the European architect.

A European Method, Not an Indian One

This distinction matters. In traditional Indian architecture, design and execution were not separate. The sutradhar (master builder) and craftsmen worked through oral traditions, geometry, proportion, and a shared system of knowledge (vidyā). Forms evolved organically through a process of making.

In Indo-Saracenic projects under British supervision, however, the process was reversed. The European model of design—paper plans, detailed elevations, working drawings—dictated the entire structure. Indian ornament became applied decoration, not a structural principle.

Thus, however “Indian” these buildings looked, their creative DNA was fundamentally Western.

The Jaipur Exception

This is where Colonel Samuel Swinton Jacob’s experiment in Jaipur stands apart. Whatever its flaws, Jacob genuinely sought to integrate Indian craftsmen into the design process, not merely the execution.

At the Albert Hall Museum and other Jaipur projects, the planning still bore Western influences, but Jacob worked directly with local artisans, allowing their traditions, methods, and ways of combining forms to shape the buildings.

This was radical in its time. While Indo-Saracenic architecture elsewhere in India was often little more than “English buildings in Indian fancy dress,” Jaipur hinted at something more: a fusion of traditions where Indian builders had a voice in shaping, not just carving, the final product.

And so, when we look at Indo-Saracenic India, we must ask: who designed, and who built? The answer tells us much about the power dynamics of colonial architecture—and why Jaipur’s story is so unusual, and so important.
