Swinton Jacob’s Expanding Legacy: From Chhatris to Palaces (1884–1902)

By the mid-1880s, Samuel Swinton Jacob’s office in Jaipur had transformed from a modest engineering unit into a bustling architectural practice. What began with the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur soon grew into a wide-ranging portfolio across Rajputana and beyond. Between 1884 and his effective retirement in 1902, Jacob and his Indian assistants were no longer confined to roads, irrigation, or minor repairs—they were designing palaces, public buildings, and memorials that reshaped the architectural face of princely India.

The Chhatri at Gaitor: A Royal Tribute

One of the earliest commissions was deeply rooted in tradition. When Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh passed away in 1880, Jacob’s office was asked to design his cenotaph at Gaitor, the royal cremation ground outside Jaipur. Three designs and plaster models were prepared, and the chosen version mirrored the chhatri of Jaipur’s founder, Sawai Jai Singh. Set on an extended platform, the pairing symbolically aligned Ram Singh with the dynasty’s illustrious origins. It was a small project, but highly symbolic—showing how Jacob’s office was stepping into the domain of the Raj Imarat, the traditional state department for royal buildings.

Beyond Jaipur: The Jubilee Buildings in Jodhpur

The Albert Hall’s visibility soon brought commissions from other princely states. Among the earliest was the Jubilee Buildings (Court Offices) in Jodhpur, named to honour Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Planned in 1887 and completed in 1896, the building fused Jacob’s planning sense with the craftsmanship of Jodhpur’s artisans. Its stone detailing echoed the apartments of Mehrangarh Fort, a fine example of how Indo-Saracenic architects worked hand-in-hand with local traditions.

Summer Residences at Mount Abu

By the 1890s, Jacob’s office had become the go-to practice for princely houses across Rajasthan. At Mount Abu, the hill station famous for its Dilwara Jain temples, Jacob’s team designed residences for the Maharajas of Jaipur, Bikaner, and later Kota. These summer retreats combined European layouts with Rajputana craftsmanship, reflecting the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the princes.

The Grand Commissions: Palaces of Kota and Bikaner

The most ambitious works of this period were palaces—vast complexes designed to rival European stately homes yet rooted in Rajput grandeur.

• Umed Bhawan Palace, Kota (1894–95): Commissioned by Maharaja Umed Singh II, the palace sprawled around courtyards in a traditional manner but featured lavish halls and intricate detailing. The Durbar Hall was its crowning glory, embodying the blend of local design with Jacob’s structural planning. Though later altered when the palace was converted into a hotel, it remains one of Jacob’s significant achievements.
• Lallgarh Palace, Bikaner (1896): Commissioned by Maharaja Ganga Singh, Lallgarh followed the new trend of Indo-Saracenic palaces modeled after European estates. With banquet halls, billiard rooms, and ballrooms, it symbolized the lifestyle of the modern Maharaja—very different from the fortified strongholds of earlier centuries. Lallgarh placed Bikaner firmly on the architectural map and cemented Jacob’s reputation as the preferred architect of Rajputana’s progressive rulers.

The Maharajas and Modernity

These palaces were not mere residences—they were political statements. Princes like Ganga Singh of Bikaner embraced Jacob’s Indo-Saracenic style as symbols of modernity. Ganga Singh went on to become one of the most prominent rulers of his time: reformer of his state, representative at the League of Nations, and signatory of the Treaty of Versailles. His palace, Lallgarh, reflected both his Rajput heritage and his global outlook.
