English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 21 – Shlok 172 to 182
Multiplicity is understood as Pṛthaktva (separateness), scriptural knowledge (Shruta) is referred to as Vitarka (analytical thought), and the transition (parivartan) of meaning (Artha), expression (Vyanjana), and activities (Yoga) is considered Vichara (deliberation or transition). ( 172)
The sage who has control over his senses contemplates the first type of Shukla Dhyana, known as Pṛthaktva-vitarka-vichāra, by transitioning from one meaning (Artha) to another, from one word (Shabda) to another, and from one activity (Yoga – mind, speech, or body) to another. ( 173)
Monks who possess the three activities (Yoga)—mind, speech, and body—and have knowledge of the fourteen Purvas (ancient Jain scriptures) engage in the contemplation of this first Shukla Dhyana. Therefore, this first Shukla Dhyana is referred to as Savitaraka (with analytical thought) and Savichara (with deliberation). ( 174)
The vastness of words and meanings within the Shrutaskandha (scriptural knowledge, likened to an ocean) serves as the object of meditation for this first Shukla Dhyana. The result of this meditation is either the suppression (Upashama) or the destruction (Kshaya) of Mohaniya Karma (deluding karma).
Explanation: This Shukla Dhyana arises through both Upashama Shreni (the path of suppression) and Kshapaka Shreni (the path of destruction). A monk on Upashama Shreni suppresses Mohaniya Karma through this meditation, while a monk on Kshapaka Shreni completely destroys it through the power of this meditation. Therefore, in a general sense, both suppression and destruction are considered the results of this Shukla Dhyana. (175)
Here, the intended meaning is that the meditating monk takes one subject from the vast ocean of Shrutaskandha (scriptural knowledge) and, while meditating on it, transitions to another subject—meaning he shifts focus from the previously grasped subject to a new one. Similarly, he moves from one word to another word and from one activity (Yoga—mind, speech, or body) to another.
For this reason, this meditation is called Savichara (with deliberation) and Savitaraka (with analytical thought). ( 176-177)

The Shrutaskandha (vast scriptural knowledge) is likened to a great ocean—filled with the jewels of words and meanings, rising with countless waves of different perspectives (Naya) and viewpoints (Bhangas). It is profound due to its extensive meditative contemplation and contains the unfathomable waters of scriptural phrases and sentences.
It is stirred by the concepts of origination, destruction, and permanence (Utpad, Vyaya, and Dhrauvya), experiencing tides of philosophical discourse. The sevenfold predications (Syadvada—”May be, may not be,” etc.) resound like its mighty waves. It is populated with numerous intellectual beings—like water creatures—who engage in debating opposing viewpoints (Purvapaksha).
This ocean is graced by the great merchants—the Gandhara Devas (chief disciples of the Tirthankaras)—who, possessing immense spiritual accomplishments, navigate it using ships of right knowledge (Samyag Jnana), adorned with the flags of pure conduct (Charitra). The ocean is churned by the powerful winds of Naya (partial viewpoints) and Upanaya (inferential reasoning), and it contains numerous islands representing the three jewels (Ratnatraya—Right Faith, Right Knowledge, and Right Conduct).
Having immersed themselves in this ocean of scriptural wisdom, the great sages engage in Pṛthaktva-vitarka-vichāra, the first stage of Shukla Dhyana.
Explanation: Only those monks who possess knowledge of the Eleven Angas and Fourteen Purvas (the most comprehensive Jain scriptures) are capable of attaining and practicing this first stage of Shukla Dhyana. The Shrutaskandha (vast scriptural knowledge) is likened to a great ocean—filled with the jewels of words and meanings, rising with countless waves of different perspectives (Naya) and viewpoints (Bhangas).
