In another manuscript, the origin of the gotras is described as follows:
Khandela had 84 villages, each ruled by a different feudal lord. These lords administered their respective villages, but in two of the villages, there were no heirs to inherit the position of the Thakur (feudal lord), so those villages remained under Khandela’s jurisdiction. A monk named Manbai visited these villages… The king of 82 villages, along with two goldsmiths, sat near the monk and respectfully greeted him. When the monk turned his whisk broom (peachhi), 82 of them were recognized as Kshatriyas, while the two goldsmiths were also included in the community. When the peachhi was turned again, only one gotra was recognized at first, but upon further deliberation, the total became 84. The two goldsmiths were assigned the “Baj” gotra. The king then remarked that these two were also part of the community. When further inquiries were made, one was identified as a Brahmin and the other as a “Moharin” (related to the goldsmith trade), which led to them being named “Shramaniya” and “Mohan.” This process resulted in the establishment of 84 gotras, with 24 representing hereditary lineage and 24 representing clan divisions.
According to this version, Khandelgiri and its feudal lords were all initiated into Jainism at the same time, and their gotras were structured simultaneously.
However, other historians argue that Khandelgiri and its feudal lords did not convert to Jainism all at once but rather gradually, and their gotras were established over time.
In the manuscripts “V Prati,” “J Prati,” and “D Prati,” it is written that the gotras did not originate simultaneously but over a period of time. According to these texts, 14 gotras were established first, and the remaining 70 were added gradually. The timeline for the establishment of these initial 14 gotras is as follows:

Although the records state that these 14 gotras were established simultaneously, the different Samvat years assigned to them suggest a gradual process.

The historian describes the establishment of these gotras as follows:
“The king received Jain teachings from Acharya Jinsen and accepted Jainism. The Rajputs abandoned their previous paths and became Jains. Along with them, 81 feudal lords also adopted Jainism. The gotras were named after their respective villages, while Khandela was considered the origin of the Sah gotra. Other villages retained their names. Among the Chauhans, some 300,000 households converted to Jainism, and the 14 Chauhan brothers followed suit. The gotras were established, and they were protected by Goddess Chakreshwari, who became their clan deity. This transformation occurred 490 years after Lord Mahavira attained nirvana when Jinsen’s disciple arrived in Khandela and formalized the gotras.”
Pandit Bakhtaram Sah also supported this view, stating that Acharya Jinsen established only 14 gotras, while the remaining gotras were established by other acharyas.
He wrote:
“Yape hain Jinseni to chaudah ho kul got,
Bahuri aur munivaran mil, chape got sugol 1730.”
(Meaning: Acharya Jinsen established only 14 gotras, and later, other monks contributed to the formation of additional gotras, reaching a total of 1730.)
However, there is no mention of how long it took to establish the remaining 70 gotras or which other acharyas contributed to their formation.
According to our belief, the establishment of 84 Gotras did not happen all at once but gradually over time. Therefore, the arrival of two goldsmiths in the royal court, Bhacharya Jinsen passing a peacock feather over their heads, and granting them the Baj Gotra—these are all mere fabrications with no element of truth in them.
This historical account highlights the structured yet evolving formation of the Khandelwal Digambar Jain community and its gotras over time.
