English Translation of Purushartha Siddhi Upay (Shri Amritchandracharya) Mangala Sanskrit Tika – : Muni shri Pranamya Sagar Maharaj (Under Acharya shri Vidyasagar Maharaj).
Uthanika (Introduction) – Now, Acharya Amritchandra, by elucidating the nature of the supreme scripture (Paramagam), reveals his intent.
Translation: With great effort, we have delineated the supreme scripture (Paramagam), which serves as the unique eye for perceiving the three worlds. We present this means for the attainment of spiritual goals for the wise.
Detailed Translation:
- (Lokatrayiknetram) The unique eye that reveals the true nature of all substances in the three worlds,
- (Paramagamam) the supreme Jain scripture,
- (Prayatnena) with great effort,
- (Nirupy) after careful determination,
- (Asmabhi) by us, by Acharya Amritchandra,
- (Vidusha) for the learned,
- (Ayam) this
- (Purusharthasiddhyupayah) means of attaining spiritual goals
- (Upodbhyate) is presented, i.e., is brought forth.
Verse: The supreme scripture, which shows the three worlds, is that knowledge. Listen to the praise of that which leads to the attainment of spiritual goals.
Commentary: The nature of the Paramagam has already been explained. It is described as the unique eye to perceive and understand the true nature of the three worlds. Thus, after a thoughtful determination of this Paramagam, I will compose this text. This statement establishes the authority of Acharya Amritchandra.
- Who is the Purusha (person)?
- What is their purpose?
- And what is the means to achieve that purpose?
Acharya Maharaj will elaborate on these aspects in detail later.
This text is intended for the learned, not for those unaware of both practical and absolute truths.
Doubt: If this text is meant for the learned, why do those who are already wise need instruction? If an ignorant person were to become wise, then this instruction would be effective; otherwise, it would be pointless.
Solution: Instruction is meant for the benefit of all beings, but only those skilled in discerning right from wrong truly benefit from it. This is because the instructor is merely an instrument. Additionally, this text explains the nature of each vow and the understanding of perspectives through reasoning, which is useful for the intelligent.
It is also said, “A fool does not attain the state of knowledge through the instruction of a guru, and a wise person does not fall into ignorance. The teacher, guru, etc., are merely instruments in the attainment of knowledge, just as Dharmastikaya is a neutral instrument in the movement of living beings and matter.”
Thus, the Arya verse forming the pledge has been completed.
